Job Purpose

AkzoNobel's global success is based on rigorous production quality allied to groundbreaking research and innovation. The Automotive Specialty Coatings (ASC) laboratory in Sassenheim, the Netherlands, is key to this RD&I capability, focus on Vehicle Refinish (VR) products.
AkzoNobel incorporates a Solutions R&D(MS) team with global responsibility for the composition, formulation, and specifications of VR products for undercoats and clearcoats. These are produced at multiple locations. This team is also responsible for the quality and specifications of the raw materials used in these products.
Within the context, your main mission in this role is to maintain, improve and align our global Vehicle Refinishes clearcoat and undercoat product lines in order to help the team up to the level production batches and a maintenance program for future support. This is part of a process in which you help us seek structural solutions based on the formulation, test regulation or quality of the raw materials used.
In addition, you help the team to to perform escalated complaint handling, quality improvement and testing of specific VR product range.
Furthermore, you will be responsible for additional laboratory work requests other than primers & clear coats when it is necessary.

Key Accountabilities

  • Maintains and promotes a safe work environment, complies with safety policies and procedures. Follows safe work practices for personal and equipment safety, in both the laboratory and in the field. End results are zero or minimum safety incidents and a clean, orderly working environment;
  • Works according to quality standards as set by Lab management (for example ISO 9001, 5S);
  • Conducts a significant level of formulation and technical work in the lab as defined in the project or production support plan;
  • Can be deployed flexibly throughout the organization;
  • Documents lab results through appropriate means including databases, laboratory notebooks, Technical summary reports and monthly summaries;
  • Delivering project results on time;
  • Feasible and timely development according to business needs;
  • Correct use of methodologies and tools;
  • Asks appropriate questions to clarify requirements, expectations and critical performance parameters;
  • Is familiar with characterization techniques, e.g. mechanical and chemical techniques;
  • Can act as first point of contact for production support;
  • Can give occasional functional guidance to technician level employees.

Key Activities

  • Switch quickly the best possible solution and (dare to) decide based on the obtained data and move forward;
  • Perform all kind of paint related tests (wet and dry);
  • Making paint on lab scale needed for testing;
  • Create and implement statistical set-ups;
  • Reporting in Lab-Notes and Technical Reports.
  • Follow the production processes with process specialists and take the necessary actions via communicating respective stakeholders.

Experience

To apply for this position, you must possess the following attributes:

  • HBO starter preferably degree with Chemistry or Physics
  • Ideally you have knowledge and experience of Paints a/o Coatings, with knowledge of polymer chemistry or process technology as an advantage;
  • Willing to follow various training courses in the field of paint chemistry and physics;
  • Able to make and present sub-studies;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills including strong written and verbal Dutch and English;
  • Proactive, self-starter.
